Kingboy Ray Vulindlela, is a 67-year-old Gugs resident, though one can say his looks belie his age.

He believs that music keeps him alive and looking young.

The pennywhistler has been putting his mouth to his flute for decades now.

“I started playing the pennywhistle as a young boy, having been influenced by my uncle, the late James Mlilo, himslef a former kwela musician,” he said.

Jmaes Mlilo was a band leader back in the day, and Rays skills were put to great use.

“We sang kwela music which is now known as jazz,”.

It turns out Ray was not always a pennywhistler, as he used to be a guitarist, but was always fascvinated by the pennywhistlers.

“I listened to them play...how they move their fingers around the instrument,” he added.

Being a full-time musician was the last thing on his mind, he says, but the bug bit once played the flute.

Other than the flute, his passion was writing.

“Playing the pennywhistle is important to me because I want to teach the youth what real music is all about and it history,” he said, signing off
