A group of excited parents graduated from the Home-School Partnership Programme (HSP) workshop held at Iliwa Primary School last week.

School principal Fundiswa Nodlela said the programme is intended to help parents understand their children’s school work.

“This empowers parents and caregivers of children aged between four and seven years to support informal learning in the home,” said Nodlela.

Trained facilitators at the school Nombuso Yekiso, Nombulelo Ngxamngxa and Nocawa Kiviet were kept busy by a ‘bunch of enthusiastic parents’

“Contrary to the popular belief that black parents don’t care about their children’ school work, we found people who were thirsty to teach they own children, we just enabled them ,” said Ms Ngxamngxa.

Thirteen participants were equipped with the skills, practical ideas and confidence to support their child’s learning.

They are also provided with fun and user-friendly ‘learning kits’ that they can continue to use in the home, including small handmade books, handouts and games.

One parent Isaac Bebe thanked the school for organising the workshop.

“I now enjoy discussing school work with my child, it was an effort before. I think this will give parents more understandinf of what goes in the classroom,” he said
