They believe that big is beautiful and they are going to prove it! On 21 November a group of plus sized beauties will be strutting their stuff at the Miss Round and Proud Beauty Pageant.

This event, to be staged at the CCFM Hall in Muizenberg, is a fundraiser Teachmaling Women’s Project whose aims is to empower young women across the province.

According to the event organiser, Nontebeko “Ntesh” Ndwandwe, the event is also aimed at de-stigmatising of fuller figured women.

“We have been programmed into believed that the images of thin individuals that we see in the media as the true representation of beauty.

As a result plus sized girls grow up believing that they are not beautiful and we know that this is not true,” she said.

She said that with the event they wanted to challenge the norms and prove that ‘big is really beautiful’.

“So we decided to gather some of the most beautiful women around and they will be strutting their staff at the event. The event will not only comprise of that, there will be some entertainment as well as guest speakers that will speak on different issue. It will also do for networking as well,” Ndwadwe explained.

She said that they were not looking for entrance for this year as they were launching this event which is set to be an annual shindig.

“Ladies who are interested in taking part can come to the event and sign up for the next year as we will be continuing with this event next year. We are raising funds so that we can’t start a roadshow where we will spreading the word of self-love to young children,” said Ndwandwe.She also invited men to come to the event and take part in one way or the other. “Yes, we want the gents to come as well. Everyone is invited to the event the more the merrier,” said Ndwande.

The pageant will take place on Saturday 21 November at the Muizenburg main road. Tickets will be available at the gates at R50.
