Chris Hani Secondary School learners are on cloud nine after making it to the final list of 16 schools that will participate in the High School Drama Mini Festivals, from 17 to 22 August.

The competition will be held at Artscape. The final list was announced recently and came out of over 60 schools from across the province, which participated in the competition.

Madoda Mahlutshana, the principal of Chris Hani Secondary School said they were “very happy and overjoyed” since this is a good opportunity for the learners to showcase their talent at the highest level.

Marlene Le Roux, Director of Artscape Audience Development and Education, congratulated the 16 schools.

“The Arts have a central role to play in Nation Building, and in building social cohesion. Therefore the Artscape High School Drama Festival is a catalyst for young people to express themselves creatively how they see South Africa and Africa and to engage with each other across cultural barriers, language and geographical areas and to start to build an understanding of the environment they live in. This project is to start to re-shape conceptions and attitudes that we have of each other as Africans,” he said.

The 2015 High School Drama Festival was initiated and coordinated by Artscape’s School Liaison Unit with funding by the HCI Foundation and Die Burger. It aims to promote social cohesion, good citizenship and empowerment through the arts.

The finalists will be transported to the Artscape Theatre to participate in the festival which is aimed at broadening their skills. At the end of the competition, the winners will be announced at a gala awards ceremony where they will receive their prizes on 22 August.

The benefits of participating in the competition are numerous and on-going. Schools become hubs of sustainable learning as they are given a platform to voice their own creativity, views and concerns to a captive audience while they also get an opportunity to broaden their horizons by experiencing the magic of live theatre, lights, sound and an audience. This Festival will also enable them to obtain theatre discipline and etiquette.

This year’s will be adjudicated by Johann van der Merwe, Ilne Fourie, Mandla Mbothwe and Bulelani Mabutyana (previously participated in the festival as a youngster and is now a director and producer) who will be tasked to select the winners in the following categories: Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actress, Best Script, Best Director, Best Production, Best Innovative Technical, and for the Option Adjudicator’s Award.
