What do we advise the youth? When I say ‘we’ I refer to those that have passed that staged. We can never be youth again. Whether we like it or not, that stage is gone. It can never come back.

So, what legacy do we leave behind? I know it is difficult to advise the youth of today. They won’t listen to you. They will look at you and say, “What have you achieved yourself?”

And if you haven’t, you will recoil. You will say nothing. But you want to say something. You want to tell them not to repeat the mistakes you made. You made plenty. You thought the world was in your pocket.

But it wasn’t. It showed you what is was. It was more than you, with its laws. And your ego was buttered. And you learnt your lessons. And you do not want those behind you to repeat them.

You want to advise them. You are a nice guy. You are fair. And you mean it. What will you say to them? Is there anything you can say? I can say plenty. The first thing I can say is: know what you want.

You may laugh and say this is rubbish. But for those who know, that is a premise for success. The premise for success is to know what you want. Oh yeah, that’s the first premise. It sounds easy.

Everything that sounds easy is difficult to implement. Because it is easy. Easy things don’t come easy. We ignore them. We say, “I don’t want that. I know what I want!” If you do, why don’t you do it?

Because it is difficult to implement.

And you miss your opportunities. And you fail all the time. And wonder why. You think you are bewitched! We like to say that. After all we are black. We believe outside powers are powerful than inside ones.

If I know what I want, nothing can stop me. It may take time, but nothing can stop me. You can come with your charms, but they won’t stop me. I am unstoppable. I know what I want!

That’s my power. My power is that I know what I want. Young people should know that. This is their weapon. They should know what they want. When they do, nothing can stop them.

It may take time. Good things take time. But never, never give up!

This is my advice to the youth as they celebrate June 16. Know what you want. What do you want? Ask yourself.

Search. Find out. Write it down. Or, have it as a movie in your mind.

Play it all the time. Let it be your life. Because what you want is your life. And don’t share it with fools. Fools will discourage you.
