It is with great pleasure to have one of our own, Langa born, Phatheka Mapoma as a Semi-finalist in the Miss Commonwealth SA Pageant.

I hooked up with Phatheka at one of the trendiest restaurants, Full Stop in Parkhurst, Johannesburg. We ran a few questions by her to get to know who she really is and what she stands for. This is how the interview went:

Q: So, tell us about Phatheka and what she stands for?

A: I was born Kwa-Langa eKapa and I am very passionate about the standard of living in our country at large. I am a registered Organ donor, anti-crime, anti-xenophobic and opposed to Rhino poaching, which is a threat to the Big Five. I stand for the truth and am not scared to speak my mind.

Q: How did you get to be a Semi-Finalist in the Miss Commonwealth Pageant?

A: Because I had the dream of doing service work for my country, given the time God has blessed me with on this planet, I saw this as a platform to do just that. Especially after having had a very humbling experience of travelling around the world to Jamaica, the United Kingdom, India, Mexico, Puerto Rico and Asia.

Q: What is the one value that you uphold?

A: The core principles my parents instilled in me which go along the values of Ubuntu that our late Tata Madiba lived by up until his last day on the planet. I aim to carry the light of respecting another human being irrespective of who they are and their background. Loving myself in order to love thy neighbor and live a life of integrity.

Q: Tell us about Phatheka growing up?

A: I had such a balanced family life where I was nurtured, coached, loved and educated yet living in the township of Kwa-Langa which was in the era of our renowned MaBrr (Brenda Fassie) along Victor Ntoni, Ringo, Peto, Thomas Msengana, Fancy Galada, Kuli Roberts, Hlubi Mboya, The Ngcukana Brothers, AmaJingqi, Heshoo Beshoo and Amampondo to count but a few.

Kahle kahle I grew up in the era of Iintsara nama Adali, gangsters!, she says with a hearty laugh.

Q: What are your interests?

A: I am interested in being an activist for the causes I’ve mentioned earlier.

Xenophobia. And a Super Community model which changes the perceived idea of a Super Model.

Q: So, as a Semi-Finalist; where to from here?

A: This is a stepping stone for the work I want to cover at large for my beloved country.

Q: What advice would you give to aspiring teenagers who would like to follow in your footsteps?

A: That being a cliché, I still believe that one needs to be true to themselves and be passionate about their chosen positive beliefs and causes. ’

We need to know we are given one go at life along with the mistakes we make along the way which can be corrected to impact on a great African dream we all long for, living a harmonious life, with less crime and less hurting on each other.

So ke bahlali, here’s our Beauty who hails from our shores urging your support by voting for her.

The number to use is 35554 and send the name “Miss Phatheka Mapoma”.

On the 2 May 2015 she will be going for the Finalists and I have no doubt in my mind she will make it
