Who owns what in freedom

2015-04-30 13:43

As we approach the 21st anniversary of our freedom, we must begin to look at the many things that are associated with freedom of our people, especially the black majority who were previously disadvantaged.

From the 27th of April 1994 many things have changed and many people have benefited a lot. Life expectancy has risen. Indeed the road to free for all has taken place. Socially things have changed as people now can shop and stand in the same queue to buy anything at any time they feel like having.

Even we have malls in Gugulethu, Khayelitsha and Philippi plaza just to name a few. However there is a question that I cannot answer every time I think about it and it leads to other questions. Who own these economical hubs in our townships?

Is it one of us or still under the hands of those who were benefiting and still benefiting as we continue to be just consumers but not owners of means of production? Is this the freedom we were striving for?

A freedom that we see our people only benefiting by being the manpower to move the hard labour force but not on management and ownership of the economic hubs in our townships
