The first science and maths no-fee high school to operate in the townships is fast reaping rewards.

LEAP Science & Maths School started in 2004 to serve the children of Langa but now has spread to other kasis like Gugulethu and Crossroads.

There are now four additional LEAP schools serving communities in other provinces.

Both LEAP Cape Town schools were based in Pinelands for many years but at the beginning of 2016 they moved into Langa and Philippi.

Currently these two schools are registered by the WCED as one school with two campuses although they each draw their students from different communities and are run independently from each other.

The Langa based LEAP school is one of only 28 schools in the Western Cape to achieve a 100% pass.

The school at Langa is Ms Lindelwa Mini, herself a graduate of the programme . This was her first year leading the school.

The top student at LEAP 1, Khanyisa Mpemba, achieved 7 out of 7 distinctions including 94% for Mathematics.

The school branch which serves children from Gugulethu, Philippi and Delft achieved a pass rate of 98% with a bachelor pass rate of over 70%. The average pass rate of schools in this area is below 70% and the average bachelor pass rate is below 40%.

“LEAP celebrates the work we do together every day to enable most of our students to move to higher education and beyond.

“Current research shows that over 13 years more than 80% of our school graduates are studying at or have graduated from higher learning institutions.

“Every child in South Africa can and will exceed expectations if provided with a real opportunity to learn and liberate in a school environment that is caring, challenging, personal and lives out relentless high expectations,” John Gilmour, Founder and Director of LEAP Science and Maths Schools
