A new housing project in the horizon

Findings of the Enviromental Impact Assessment (EIA) of the latest housing project in Khayelitsha might change the projected number of units to be built.

The project which is called Mahama Housing Project is meant to benefit people who can’t afford houses and backyarders from Makhaza, Harare and Mandela Park.

However, this could change depending on the findings of the EIA.

On Tuesday 15 October a company doing the assessments, Victoria Read Environmental Consulting presented some of its findings so far.

Victoria Read, owner of the company, said specialist studies have been undertaken to assess the impact on the loss of natural vegetation, the wetland in one of the sites and the potential loss of heritage resources. She said the draft basic assessment report is in the process of being drafted and the community and all interested and affected parties and stakeholders will have an opportunity to comment on the EIA reports and provide their input.

Steering committee member Lungiswa Ntshuntshe said she is slightly satisfied with the report but her problem was the effect it is going to have on the communities once it is finished.

“There needs to be a contingency plan because we do not know if more or fewer units will be built when we get the final findings,” she said.
