Parents from Khayelitsha could relax knowing their children were safe at the start of the holidays.

Arise and Shine Ministries from Khayelitsha, together with the department of community safety hosted a holiday programme from Monday 9 December to Friday 13 December for children and youth who live in high priority crime areas in Khayelitsha.

Pastor Ethel Sobantu said the five-day programme started from 09:00 to 16:30 each day with different activities and speakers.

She said they worked with about 180 children from the age 7 every day.

“We have been doing this for more than four years now and the reason is that we want to keep the children away from the streets,” she said.

Sobantu said during the school holidays children have nothing to do and they are easily drawn into doing wrong.

She said they teach children about the dangers of drugs and alcohol and crime.

She said they invite different organisations and government departments to talk to the children and youth.

“We have worked with most of them before and we know their problems so we also offer one on ones with them to try and help,” she said. Sobantu said the programme is a help for working parents who have no one to look after their children.
