A 39-year-old man will appear at the Strand Magistrate’s Court after being caught with abalone worth just under a million.

Sergeant Noloyiso Rwexana said on Tuesday morning members from the Cape Town K-9 Unit were conducting crime prevention patrols in Lwandle when they spotted a dark grey Nissan Hardbody bakkie of which the two occupants appeared suspicious.

Rwexana said police tested the vehicle registration number and it was found to be false.

“At about 07:15 they pulled the vehicle over on the N2 at the Broadlands road traffic intersection. The driver of the vehicle jumped out and fled on foot.

“Police searched the vehicle in the presence of the passenger and found a number of bags containing abalone covered with building sheets behind the seats of the vehicle,” she said.

“More bags of abalone were also recovered from the back of the vehicle. A total of 5 030 units of abalone were found worth an estimated street value of just under a million rand,” said Rwexana.

The man was arrested on charges under the Living Marine Resources Act and will appear in Strand Magistrates’ Court.

The provincial commissioner Lieutenant General Khombinkosi Jula praised the members involved for their vigilance.

This is a second abalone related arrest in the area within a few days.

The police are said to be working tirelessly to close down syndicates who are stealing maritime resources.V Read about another abalone bust on page 7.
