Khayelitsha Mall was abuzz on Saturday 22 February when members of the Njomba Fitness Academy (NFA) held rehearsal in an effort to promote their upcoming Fitness Explosive. The explosive will be held at Thusong Centre in Khayelitsha on Saturday 28 March.

Several local clubs including Siya Fitness Club and Women’s Fitness Club took part in the rehearsal.

Founder of the academy Monwabisi Njomba urged people to come and support the show.

“This is going to be one of its kind. Our aim is to promote a healthy lifestyle. Everyone from the age 10 and up is allowed to come,” said Njomba.

Explaining why they were exercising at the Khayelitsha Mall, he said they want people to see them.

“Since we are a small organisation and we don’t have funds to market ourselves in the media we decided to go out to the people so that they can see us or join us,” he stated.

Njomba said he started his academy eight years ago at F Section in Khayelitsha.

“I grew up training karate in Uitenhage in the Eastern Cape. When I arrived in Cape Town I started training young children karate at Eyethu hall, but later decided to include adults so that they can also stay fit,” he said, adding that he trained people for free for three years.

The soft-spoken athlete said after he realised that people were not taking training seriously he decided to charge them.

“People were doing as they please sometimes not attending the gym. That’s when I decided to charge them R100 per month so that they can take the gym sessions serious. We train every Tuesday and Thursday from 18:00 to 19:00,” he said.

One of the trainees Thandekile Khuse said the academy changed his life.

“When I started training I was overweight but now my body is in good shape. It changed my lifestyle for the better,” said Khuse who started training in 2018.
