The Urban Rural Development and Capacity Building Project (URDCP) commemorated World Aids Day in Langa last Saturday.

World Aids Day is an international Day dedicated to raising awareness of the pandemic caused by the spread of HIV infections and mourning those who have succumbed to the disease.

Dr Nomafrench Mbombo, the Western Cape MEC for health, was also present at the event.

Nompumelelo Ngoqo and Nosipho Sikutshwa founded URDCP in 2000, as a means to alleviate the poverty and raise awareness of the dreaded disease.

According to Ngoqo, since then, they adopted a style of education through entertainment for the Langa community regarding World Aids Day.

“We wanted to end the stigma that people living with HIV suffer and to show that we do love them,” she said.

She said they have achieved most of the organisation’s founding goals.

“Everyone who was present was entertained and, for once, shelved their daily problems.”

Mbombo said: “These days, Aids is like any other disease because most people are on treatment. The problem presently is that new infections are detected from women as young as 15-years-old.

“This is because of the phenomenon of “blessers” who have the money to tempt young, poor girls and in the process infect them with the HIV,” she said.

“Men must man-up and say no.”
