A young maskandi musician, Xhentsakumisiwe from Langa, released his new album Ndize Ngokwam last month. The artist, whose real name is Landile Sokweba, says the album consists of 15 songs.

Xhentsakumisiwe, who is original from Ngcobo, in the Eastern Cape, says he never thought that one day he would release his own album. He grew up listening to the late Njemboqo and Shushubaby. Then he became involved in the music in 2017. “When I arrived in Cape Town in 2009 I met with Tornado, one of Amawele ka MamTshawe members before he (Tornado) became popular in music. We were neighbours in Langa and he used to play his guitar for fun. And when he got popular I got inspired by him,” he says. Xhentsakumisiwe says in 2017 he was approached by another maskandi artist known as Tshuza Ntombi, who wanted him to be his manager.

“Because of the great work that I was doing for him the other two artists Sokalentsangu and Ndodenesikhwele came to me and I became their managers as well. Sokalentsangu was a producer and he was blind. So, I used to go with him when he is going to studio,” says Xhentsakumisiwe.

He would assist some of the artists when they were working in the studio.

“Soka Lentsango asked me one day if I don’t want to do my own album which I refused. He kept on saying that I have talent. He even asked me to feature in one of his album known Khanivike,” says Xhentsakumisiwe adding that he featured in the song Kanivike which was the title album and another one was Vula Bangene.

Xhentsakumisiwe said he started his album end of February and finished it on the 13 April.

“Everything happened unexpectedly. I learned about music instruments here in Cape Town from other artists,” says Xhentsakumisiwe.

He composed the music himself and like all other artists he sings about life in general and his own experiences.

He promotes his music on radio stations and performs at taxi ranks, weddings and special occasions. His album costs R80 per copy. For bookings or more information, call him on 063 744 7923.
