On Saturday, ward 98 councillor Anele Gabuza honoured the champions of a Youth Day tournament that was held at KwaMfundo High School in Harare.

Masibambane Community Hall was the venue of the awards.

The tournament was held to commemorate the 16 June 1976 generation of learners who rose up against the system of apartheid education, which enforced the use of the Afrikaans language as a medium of instruction in all subjects.

About 14 teams participated in the tournament from each division.

Ther were seniors, the u.15 and u.13 in both soccer and netball.

All the teams that took part in the tournament were honoured. Each team walked away with reflective 11 bibs, two balls and the champions in all divisions received trophies and medals, said Gabuza.

“The equipments were bought with ward allocation money.

“We want to ensure that everyone sees what the money is spent on, and that is why we hand them over in a community hall so the all can bear witness” he said.

Gabuza said they had spent about R50 000 the prizes alone.

New Stars Khayelitsha Football Club were the overall winners in the competition.

Captain Khanyisa Mkhwambi (22) from Harare said the equipment will assist them in training sessions and motivate them to work harder.
