A would-be cellphone robber was stabbed and pelted with stones in what has been described as the “harshest roadside justice” to be meted out in Langa.

The man who is known in the area was taken by paramedics to Groote Schuur Hospital where he died due to injuries sustained during the attack.

Police spokeswoman Sergeant Noloyiso Rwexana confirmed the incident.

“A case of murder has been opened for investigation. The police arrived at a scene at Zone 1 on 13 January 2017, at 8pm and found a man in his thirties with multiple injuries to his body,” said Rwexane.

Rwexane added that circumstances surrounding the incident were under investigation.

“ No one has been arrested at this stage. Anyone with information that can assist with the investigation is requested to contact investigating office Sergeant Mzawupheli Kili on 079 320 3905 or Langa SAPS on 021- 695 8062,” she said.

. Police attached to Nyanga SAPS arrested two suspects yesterday afternoon minutes after they perpetrated a business robbery at a cellular telephone shop at a shopping Centre in Philippi.

The members were on their way back from a tracing operation when they were standing at the robots hearing gun shots coming from the shopping Centre. They then saw shoppers running, and four suspects one positively armed running away from the Centre. They managed to arrest two suspects(one with a firearm), the other two are yet to be arrested.

It was later established that the four suspects had robbed several cellular telephones from the shop at the Centre. A vigilant security guard stopped the man in their tracks , and the suspects dropped the cellphones and fled the scene. The two suspects aged 23 and 26 are expected to appear in the Athlone Magistrate Court soon on, business robbery and possession of an illegal firearm charges.
