A 24-year-old man who was wanted for fatally shooting a bus driver during a robbery in Nyanga, was shot and killed after attempted gunfire exchange with the police.

According to police, the standoff took place on Tuesday morning in Browns Farm at 05:20.

“The members were on patrol in Ngulube Road when they were flagged by a concerned resident informing them that he was robbed by four unknown suspects, with one positively armed with a gun.

Police followed the directions given by the victim and while they were driving in Ngulube Road, saw the suspects who started fleeing in different directions. Three ran towards the shacks and the one armed with the gun instead ran towards the police, drew his firearm and pointed it at the police,” said Sitshitshi.

Sitshitshi said that police defended themselves by shooting the suspect.

“Police shot the suspect in the leg and he ran away in between the houses and was found dead in Dwarhane Street.

A 9MM pistol with a magazine and four live rounds of ammunition were found in his possession including four different cell phones,” she added.

She added that the suspect has been identified as the gunslinger who killed a Golden Arrow Bus driver in September in Zwelitsha Drive, Nyanga.

“The complainant who flagged the police after being robbed has visited the station. Two cell phones belonged to him, one belonged to a learner and the fourth one is still to be identified.

An inquest docket has been opened against the deceased, including the fact that he pointed a firearm at police, the illegal possession of an unlicensed firearm and possession of presumably stolen property,” said Sitshitshi. “Police have adopted a zero tolerance approach to crime,” she added.
