Atotal of about 30 unemployed youths graduated in a special programme championed by the City of Cape Town to empower them at Harare Library on Friday.

The two week computer course was meant to empower them with special skills.

Ward 99 councillor Bongile Ngcani described the program as a great initiative to equip them with computer skills to open doors for employment.

“It’s a first time having such a programme. We used to conduct job readiness training, but this time we decided to upgrade and add computer skills to expose them to technology,” said Ngcali.

“The is still a huge gap that needs to be filled.

“Most of our youth lack marketing and computer skills as some of them do not have matric certificates. So we train them with the basics so that they can be able to do their curriculum vitaes and surf the internet,” he said.

Ngcani added that they had put aside about R100 000 from the ward allocation funds to train youth.

According to graduand Zandile Mabaso, 29, from Ndlovini, the course has opened employment opportunities for them.

“I have a matric certificate but not computer skills, which skills I believe will enhance my chances to get a job. I will be able to put in my curriculum vitae with confidence,” she said.

She expressed gratitude to the City and wished they could provide more training programmes to equip the youth.
