Several townships have been marked as no-go zones following recent attacks on ambulances.

Browns Farm Phillipi, Tafelsig, Hyden Park, Nyanga, Gugulethu, New Crossroads, Manenberg, Hanover Park, Kalksteenfontein, Site C Khayelitsha and J-Section in Lingelethu have been classified as red zones between 6;30pm and 6;30am.

“Ambulances will not enter these areas without a police escort.

People living in these areas may expect delays should they call for an ambulance,” said the minister of health Nomafrench Mbombo.

A fortnight ago an ambulance crew was held at gunpoint and robbed of their cell phones and wallets.

The crew arrived at the patient’s address at Shwabane Crescent, J-Section, Khayelitsha when the incident occured.

The crew have received trauma counsilling and have been booked off from work until further notice.

Minister Mbombo condemned these attacks on the ambulance personnel.

“I have learnt that an EMS crew was held at gunpoint while responding to an emergency call in Khayelitsha.

“ An attack on a paramedic is an attack on an entire community. This is senseless crime against the community,” she said.
