A mother of a minor who allegedly dates an older man is livid after the case she opened with police never saw a day in court, in Gugulethu.

The 56 year old woman, whose name cannot be published to protect identity of her daughter, 14, said she opened a case with the local police in March after she became aware that her daughter, who was then 13, was in a sexual relationship with a man, 22. The man lives on the same street with the girl. She first became aware of the romantically relationship earlier in the month and that she went to fetch the girl from the man’s house. The girl then went to buy airtime at about 4pm, but she never returned back home until after 8pm.

The police came around 7pm after she called them.

“We searched for her around the area until she came back. She told me she was standing at a corner somewhere with him. She said he persuaded her to have sex with him and that he was going to use condom so that she does not fall pregnant. I asked the police to warn him not to approach her again, but he defied that,” said the mother.

Constable Sindisiwe Ngqele, communication officer at Gugulethu Police Station, confirmed that the case of statutory rape was opened.

The docket was thereafter presented to the prosecutor and the prosecutor declined to prosecute due to the findings of the doctor.
