Another Somali shooting victim

2019-06-20 06:00

A 30-year-old Somali national is yet another victim of violent crime after being shot and wounded on Monday evening, 17 June in Nomzamo.

The shooting comes barely a week after two Somali nationals were shot in Mkhungela Street, Asanda Village on Tuesday last week. One died and the other had to be rushed to hospital for treatment.

In that incident the suspects robbed the Bafana Cash Store of undisclosed amounts of cash, airtime and cigarettes.

City Vision published the story last Thursday under the headline “Spaza shop robbery, shooting”, in which it detailed how the 37-year-old shopkeeper was shot in the neck and died at the scene.

In the most recent incident, police are investigating a case of attempted business robbery and of attempted murder.

According to police spokesperson Sgt Mthokozisi Gama, the incident, which occurred around 18:40 in Lonja Street, involved three unknown men, one of them armed, which saw the Somali national being shot in the stomach.

He said: “The victim was rushed to hospital for medical treatment after being shot by these assailants. There was nothing taken from the shop and we have not arrested anyone at this stage.”

Despite all efforts to get comment from Siyabonga Macaula, chairperson of the Community Policing Forum (CPF) in Lwandle, none was received before going to print.

Police urge anyone with information, or who may have witnessed the incident to contact the investigating officer, Warrant Officer Randall van Wyk on 021 845 3060 or 082 522 1208.

Meanwhile, Gama confirmed no arrest had been made for the death of the 37-year-old Somali of the Bafana Cash Store.

He said police still requested that anyone with information leading to the arrest of the culprits to contact Lwandle detective Sergeant Bongekile Ntsontso, who is eager for justice to be served at the earliest opportunity.

He can be reached on 082 8522 3361 or 021 845 2060.
