A new health, safety and mental health application (App) to offer medical support for learners has been unveiled.

The app which is called Keep Safe Schools has been designed to help teachers and learners as young as five years.

During a talk hosted by TEDx at Guga S’thebe in Langa, on Saturday 19 October, Dr Rufaro Nyamuda explained the significance of the App. She said it helps manage learners’ health information and offers a learning platform for teachers and learners.

TEDx is a non-profit organisation (NPO) that prepares talks, demonstrations and performances that are idea-focused and cover a wide range of subjects to foster learning inspiration and creates conversations that matters.

Nyamuda said there are many learners with medical issues and the schools should help them. “A lot of teachers are not trained to look after children when it comes to their health which puts them at great risk,” she said.

Although the project is a pilot Nyamuda said it has been rolled out to 28 schools since the start of the year.

Nyamuda said since the App is new it will be live for everyone to access it in January 2020. She added that the response has been overwhelming.

According to Nyamuda it has also been endorsed by the national department of education.

A resident who only described herself as Bongi said the App is a very good idea and will help a lot of teachers and learners.

She said children spend most of their time with teachers, therefore it is important for teachers to know learners’ health history and how to help when it is needed.

Those who are interested in the App can email Nyamuda on ruf.nym@gmail.com for more information.
