Are we as pure as envisioned?

In the Xhosa idiom, phrases are used to compare things, express emotions or describe something.

One of the amazing phrases we use is “ilizwe liyintombazana” which basically means the world is a girl.

This is to express the beauty, purity and all the good things about the world comparing it to a young girl.

So clearly our forefathers saw something when they compared these two and it was definitely a positive comparison.

However, is the comparison of the world being precious as a girl still valid in our day and age?

Are we the same girls that our forefather’s saw as precious, that they could compare us with the amazing world?

This is a question that one should think about, with all that is happening. Young women consume excessive amounts of alcohol, drugs; even girls as young as 11 years of age have access to such things. We do not act responsibly. Some justify selling their bodies in exchange for money.

We refuse to pick ourselves up and work for what is our own, instead, we look for rich boyfriends to take care of us.

The bottom line is that we do not carry ourselves as princesses, queens and goddesses that we truly are. Its time for change, let’s follow the minority and start acting like the royalty we truly are.

And maybe, just maybe we can be what our grandfathers saw when they said “ilizwe liyintombazana”.
