A young maskandi artist from Langa is living his dream after winning his first award as Best Maskandi Artist in the 4th annual Eastern Cape Music Awards (ECMAS) on Saturday 7 December. The event was held at Christian Centre in East London. Landile Sokweba, who is known as ‘Xhentsa Kumisiwe’, thanked his fans and family for their support. “I couldn’t expect it to happen so soon. I released my first album titled ‘Ndize Nkokwam’ in April this year (“Album release, a dream come true”, City Vision, 6 June 2019). When I heard that my album was nominated, I was on cloud nine. To me it was a great achievement being nominated,” said Xhentsa Kumisiwe, adding that winning the award is a bonus. He said in the maskandi industry, it is rare for an artist to get nominated for a debut album. “I was performing all over the province and doing interviews on radio stations including on the local radio stations in Eastern Cape begging people to vote for my album. I don’t have words to thank my supporters who voted for me,” he said. Xhentsa Kumisiwe, who is originally from Engcobo, vowed to give his best for his second album. “I’m busy with my second album which I’ll release in June next year. I can assure my supporters that they must await another great album,” he said.
