The Gugulethu Nyanga Langa and Khayelitsha (Gunyalakha) arts movement will host a competition to select eight groups that will join a workshop programme to upskill them.

The competition will be on Saturday July 16 at the Gugulethu Sports Complex from 10am.

Gunyalakha spokesman Luthando Tshaya said once these groups have been identified they will be allocated spaces in a programme funded by The Federation of Western Cape.

“This is our second variety dance competition and we invite all groups to attend,” he said.

He said the final selection will be done on July 30.

“ The selected finalists will take part in a 10 week skills development course,” he said.

The course will include dance classes be it contemporary, African dance and hip hop.

Music classes featuring marimba and djembe playing will follow while speech and drama will be offered on Saturdays.

He said lunch will provided to all participants on the day.

Iqilima Dance Group won the the previous competition and took home R1000 plus a ticket to perform at he Kasi2kasi Public Arts Festival that took place in Khayelitsha recently.

Tshay said the second competition “was bigger and better”

“Prizes are huge and surely to win a spot in the workshops will be great for the groups,” he said.
