With a deep-rooted passion for hip-hop culture, Ayanda “King” Sisusa is unapologetically dedicated to his craft.

The local performer recently dropped “If the shoe fits”, the second single off his upcoming EP Cainz Offering and is preparing to play his first set of the year at the Hip Hop Clash Festival at Lookout Hill this weekend.

It’s been a long hard journey for the perfectionist who’s itching to make his mark on the local industry. He was just 12 when he fell in love with hip hop culture. “I watched Get Rich or Die Trying and that was it for me,” he explains, referring the 2005 50 Cent film.

After years of honing his skill and a quiet confidence, Ayanda believes he can write and rhyme well. His mission now is to prove that to the rest of the world. This is what he hopes will happen as he starts distributing his music.

Ayanda is first and foremost a writer. “Rap gave me a voice,” he says and his tracks are filled with thought provoking lyrics that reflect on his own life as well as the world around him. He raps about “real stuff”, with a firm belief that good hip hop needs to be an authentic experience.

Ayanda’s first single “High and Low” has been play listed on local community stations Radio Zibonele and Bush Radio and on a Johannesburg station. Both tracks were produced by DA Pain Snake Season Beats at Kayfo Lounge Production, a studio in Bloekombos. “If the shoe fits” has been receiving positive reviews and has seen Ayanda shortlisted for an underdog feature on the Slikour On Life website.

He’s keen on working in other genres at some point and says he’s very opened minded. He’d hate to be known as “just” a hip hop artist. “Don’t put me in a box, don’t filter me.”

Ayanda’s manager Elias Mcephe describes him as more of a rock star, pointing out that he immerses himself completely in his live performances.

Elias is just one of the people helping Ayanda realise his musical dreams in recording his EP Cainz Offering. He’s still busy with production, but the short album will include the involvement of Nomvuyo Magalela, Mbasa Ngumbela (Young B), Nkwane, Nash, O Bee Gee and producers Ashes Krizz Beats and DA Pain Snake Season Beats. He’s also benifited from the help of investor Rudolph Fisher. “Without them it wouldn’t be possible.”

Music fans can catch Ayanda in action alongside some of Cape Town’s best at the Hip Hop Clash Festival at Lookout Hill Khayelitsha on Saturday from 16:00. Tickets cost R50. Visit the Facebook event page for more about the show.

On Friday 10 March he’ll be at Hip-Hop Explosion, which will serve as VIJ’s video launch for his single “Still” at La Disqo in Bloekombos from 17:00 to 20:00. Entry is free.
