BABALO Vala (29) has written six publications – all in a space of three years!

“Growing up I always had an inquisitive mind and interest in research and finding hidden things,” he said.

“While doing my masters research, my desire to write grew.” He couldn’t finish his postgrad after falling ill and started writing in 2012.

“I got very sick and couldn’t do much,” he said.

He published his first 343-page manuscript in 2015.

“I realised I could actually write,” said Babalo, who published a newsletter in 2016.

“People bought it and I realised I should write more.”

He started writing books last year and later formed a publishing company.

“We held the launch at the University of the Western Cape and it was attended by lots of people,” he said.

“After that I started receiving invites to speak at events at universities.”

Among his publications is a handbook that encourages poor people to eat healthily.

“I did a short medical missionary programme and published a book along health lines,” he said.

“And I got some certification as a health promoter.”

He said he writes for the poor, not the rich.

“I realised the health message had been made so expensive,” he told City Vision .

“When you ask people about leading a healthy lifestyle, they tell you it’s expensive.

Babalo said the book proves those people wrong.

His friend and varsity classmate Thebe Mashewu said: “Babalo likes questioning things. He never takes things at face value.”
