Eleven people were arrested in Nyanga over the weekend for crimes ranging from murder to rape and possession of unlicensed firearms among others.

Police spokesperson, Captain Ntoboxolo Sitshitshi, says four suspects, aged between 24 and 31, were arrested in Browns Farm on Friday night for possession of a vehicle they had allegedly hijacked in Samora Machel earlier that day.

“An unlicensed firearm they allegedly used during the incident was also confiscated,” she says.

“They will appear in the Athlone Magistrate’s Court today on charges of hijacking and possession of an unlicensed firearm.”

Sitshitshi says six others are due to appear in the Athlone and Wynberg magistrates’ courts this week on charges ranging from murder to possession of an unlicensed firearm and rape.

“One suspect was arrested in Philippi for possession of an unlicensed firearm while a 32-year-old man was arrested yesterday [Sunday] after he allegedly raped a 14-year-old girl in Philippi East.”

She further says that three men were arrested for murder, and two for assaulting and stabbing a 22-year-old man, who died in hospital in Cossovo last night.

Also in the early hours of this morning, police acted swiftly when they noticed a Quantum driver who had what appeared to be a firearm in his possession.

“To ascertain whether it was indeed a firearm, members stopped the driver and asked to search him.

“When questioned, the driver said it was his firearm but could not provide a licence.”

Upon further examination, it was found that the weapon had been reported stolen in Gugulethu in 2001.

“He is also expected to appear in Athlone this week for the illegal possession of an unlicensed firearm,” Sitshitshi says.

A 20-year-old man is also due to appear in the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court on rape charges.
