An inspiring musician from Khayelitsha works at a bank during the day and performs during the night and on weekends.Lemmuela Dhladhla also known as “Lemme” (27) said she always loved singing and performing from a very early age.“My mom would use pots to create beats and ask me to sing and dance when we have family gatherings,” she said.She said when she was growing up she was very active. She did traditional dancing, hip-hop and just loved entertaining.Lemme said when she first got a laptop that was when she started making her own beat and played around with different music-making software.While studying at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) she worked at the campus radio as a DJ. There she was introduced to other aspects of music. “I really enjoyed my time as a DJ at the campus radio. It exposed me to a lot of things,” said Dhladhla.She said her friends played a big role in her choosing to make music because they saw how she loved singing for them and encouraged her to take it serious.She said she was introduced to gqom music by her cousin who is a music producer.Dhladhla said she fell in love with this genre of music and decided to take it up.She is the female voice in the hit gqom song called “Celu Mnqongo” by DJ Jive Maweekend.“The love I get from people is amazing,” she said.She has no album of her own yet because she is still learning how to DJ, she said. “I just have a single for now. I plan to shoot a video for the album as well,” she said.
