The National Libraries of South Africa in partnership with the Western Cape PanSALB Provincial office and uSiba Loluntu community organization from Gugulethu, hosted the IMLD celebration in Gugulethu last Tuesday at the JL Zwane Church.

The International Mother Language Day is an annual celebration as pronounced by UNESCO in 1999, to celebrate global language diversity.

It goes without saying that each and every human being has to ensure that their language remains alive.

The day’s activities included poetry, traditional music, comedy, drama, and various speakers.

Dr Sebolelo Mokapela, well-known actress Thoko Ntshinga and businesswoman Bongie Mdongwe, graced the occasion.

The theme of the day was that language should not be seen to be spoken only, but also be used as a tool of economic empowerment.

Actors were encouraged to use more of their languages on stage and elsewhere, whilst the young were informed to use language as the basis of their thoughts.

Six primary schools, including Fezeka High School took part in the event.
