The Diva and the Maestro are back for what promises to be another experience of note for Cape music lovers. Former Idols winner Karin Kortje and gifted musician Camillo Lombard are the main acts for the concert on Sunday 9 June at the Cape Town City Hall.

The previous two years, the show was held at the Baxter Theater, but this year it takes place at the historic Cape Town City Hall. Kortje will be singing some of her own songs and covers of popular tunes.

But saxophone sensation Donveno Prins, The Overberg’s Got Talent Winners (all seven of them), the Cape Music Institute Choir (CMI) and Darren Braaf will make sure there is enough variety to satisfy every musical taste.

Kortje is still negotiating with a big star in the South African music industry to join them and the name will be revealed soon if everything goes according to plan.

She will be launching the Karin Kortje Foundation on the night of the show. It is a non-profit organisation (NPO) which she registered in 2018. The aim of the foundation is to provide and create accessible, influential and quality music programmes/projects for marginalised young people that will create avenues for expression and development of talent.

The Karin Kortje Foundation believes that every young person should have the opportunity to experience the power and magic of music and the world of arts. The concert is about uplifting the youth and giving them a platform to showcase their talents. The guest artists will also have some time during rehearsals to mentor children through their talent.

Divas and Maestro aim to create a platform for the youth where they can show off their talents to a broader audience on a big, professional stage, says Kortje.

She adds that the children from Lombard’s CMI and the Overberg’s Got Talent competition will be taking part in the show. Kortje says: “Basil Apollis, myself and Camillo wanted to create this platform for the youth of Cape Town and this year will be the third time we are doing this production. When I say Cape Town, I refer to the Cape Town Music Institute. Camillo’s music school is also a school for underprivileged kids who want to take their music careers further. They are from the Cape Flats, so it will be our marginalised kids that we use and then also the kids from the Overberg. Not random kids, but those that take part in the talent competition because they have to go through that process first.”

Kortje says it will be a glamorous event, so she wants people to dress up, it’s on a Sunday and the show starts at 18:00, but doors open at 17:00.

“We are also launching the Karin Kortje Foundation on the night. So, it’s going to be a glamorous event, people can dress up and look nice – bling-bling, you know – and come and enjoy what we will be presenting on the night.

“We will be having guest artists and guest celebrity MCs.” She added that all the proceeds from the concert will be used for the upliftment of young musicians through the Karin Kortje Foundation.

V Tickets are available now from Computicket and Shoprite and Checkers. Golden Circle tickets cost R180 and general seating tickets are R160 each. No kids under the age of six will be allowed.
