The sensational, multi-award winning music group, The Soil, will be headlining the Hlala Nam Comedy Experience on September 2, 2017 at the Khayelitsha Cricket Oval Sports Grounds, on the corner of Steve Biko and Walter Sisulu Roads (behind the Khayelitsha Magistrate’s Court).Yes, it’s officially confirmed that the sensational, mesmerizing, multi-award winning music group, The Soil, is coming to Khayelitsha for the first time. Talk about history in the making! This is all thanks to Phumlani Vokovi, a former comedian-turned-event organizer from the “streets, corners, avenues, crescents and roads” of Khayelitsha.Vokovi has done it with the support of the people of Khayelitsha and surrounding areas, all those who came to his comedy shows at Lookout Hill Tourism Centre.Who would’ve thought this would happen when it all started all those years ago? When he started organizing events almost three year ago, he had a lot of hurdles to cross and one of the more vivid in his recollection is that of doing robust marketing and organizing an event only to have 6 people coming to the event. The crowd he was expecting? Dololo kulo ndawo! What a let-down! He smelled a rat and thought, no ways, bukhona ubugqwirha phakathi. However, as the saying goes, you can’t keep a good man down! He went back to the drawing board and reviewed his plan. He made critical changes that would turn out to bear sweet fruit for him. He introduced door-to-door marketing, going from house to house, telling people about his event and let them feel, see and hear the passion from his horse’s mouth. It worked like magic! His next event was a massive success that filled the Malibongwe Restaurant at Lookout Hill Tourism Centre to the brim, with still more people wanting to come in and enjoy the laughter being served inside. It was a three-day event hosted over the weekend from Thursday, August 31st – September 2nd, 2016. He marketed the event and tickets were sold out within two months before the event. What a wow! What a marvellous! No posters and no flyers. No newspapers, no media releases. Just pure word of mouth. Even more amazing an element in this, is the delivery of tickets to comedy lovers. He made door-to-door ticket deliveries. From those humble beginnings to greater things, such as hosting The Soil.Being that the event is a comedy show featuring afro-jazz and poetry, on the performers ’line-up we have Linomtha, an artist from Native Rhythms Productions and Ayanda Tywaku, known as Aylo, also an artist and both are from Khayelitsha. To crack people up, we have Luphelo Kodwa, a Savanna Audience Choice Award nominee, from Khayelitsha. To vote for him, SMS “40009” to “45757”. SMS cost R1.50. Free and bundled SMS’ do not apply. VAS rates apply. Errors will be billed. 20 Votes per mobile number. RSA only. Alongside Luphelo, on the comedians line-up we have Khanyiso Kenqa, KG Mokgadi (from Abotshomi on DStv and Bantu Hour in SABC 2), Tsepiso Nzayo and Mbu “Many Laughs” Msongelwa (both (regulars on 99% Xhosa Comedy Show) They’ll be joined by Mawonga Gayiya, magician semi-finalist on SA’s Got Talent 2016, Phillip Dikotla and Tsitsi Chiumya, nominated for Savanna Newcomer Comic Choice Award 2017, supported by Thokozani Mfundisi and Pius Xulu. Seeing the growth in his events, with the support of comedy lovers, he decided to go big and haul in the biggest fish of them all – The Soil, making history as the first person to do so in Khayelitsha. So it’s pretty simple, come to Khayelitsha Cricket Oval Sports Grounds, next to Khayelitsha Magistrate’s Court and opposite Khayelitsha Mall, on September 2, 2017 and show support that speaks to the tune of “We Are Family”, a hit for which The Soil is known.Khayelitsha, stand up and show love by supporting local upcoming comedians because after all, support begins at home! For more info about the events, contact Phumlani Vokovi on 078 276 1075 or Zukisa Bikitsha on 062 931 5271 or Zizipho Gcasamba on 060 707 7011.
