Soul Brothers FC surprised the crowd when they beat Green Lovers 2-0 and was crowned as champion of the June 16 u.13 Tournament held at Vuyiseka Sport Complex on Saturday 29 June.

Brothers which hails from Better Life went to half time leading with a goal and doubled it in the second half. They walked away with a R600 cash prize.

The tournament which started on Sunday 16 June comprised of 16 teams playing for the u.13 Phillipi East Football League Association. Soul Brothers coach Brian Matiwane said they came into the match as underdogs.

“I didn’t expect to win. We were all surprised. Green Lovers is a good team,” said Matiwe. He said he gives all the credit to his boys for showing good character.

“My boys gave it all. They were prepared to die on the field. They stuck to the rules and moved the balls nicely,” he said.

Matiwane stated that the tournament was supposed to be played a fortnight ago but because of bad weather, it had to be played last Saturday. Green Lovers coach Thando Tlayi said they played a balanced game.

“I congratulate them. They were the better team for the day. They performed well,” said Tlayi. He said his boys made silly mistakes which cost them the game.

“They conceded the goal in the early minutes of the game and did the same thing in the second half. And it was difficult for my boys to penetrate to their defence,” he stated.

Green Lovers pocketed R400 as runners up. And it was R350 for third place and R250 for fourth place.
