Two armed robbery suspects were caught as a result of swift reaction from Lwandle police during a business robbery on Friday 7 September.

The robbery took place around 19:55 in Solomon Drive in Asanda Village.

It is alleged the complainant was at his shop with other colleagues when a group of five unknown men forced their way inside the shop, brandishing firearms.

They pointed the firearms at the staff and took an undisclosed amount of cash, cigarettes and cellphones before fleeing the scene in a white Toyota Hilux, which was parked nearby.

Sergeant Mthokozisi Gama, spokesperson for Lwandle police, said members of the Lwandle police Crime Prevention Unit reacted on the complaint and spotted the fleeing suspects.

The officers gave chase up until Khayelitsha, Gama related, where two of the suspects were arrested and three firearms without serial numbers were confiscated.

“The vehicle, a Toyota Hilux LDV, stolen cash and five cellphones were also seized,” Gama said. “The three other suspects managed to evade arrest.”

A case of business robbery was opened and another charge of possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition was added.

“The two suspects, aged 35 and 44, arrested on Friday, briefly appeared in Strand Magistrate’s Court on Monday 10 September,” Gama said.

“Their case was postponed to Wednesday 12 September.”

In the early hours of Tuesday 11 September, Lwandle police went in search of the other three suspects and managed to track them down.

They were arrested in Khayelitsha, Marikana and Delft, and another firearm and an undisclosed amount of money were seized during the operation.

Gama said all three men, aged 26 to 36, will appear alongside the other two suspects on the same charges.
