A youth group in Khayelitsha is doing all it can to make the youth live a positive life.

Buyambo Youth Group was formed in 2009 as a means to educate the youth and deter them from the ills of the society, but was later transformed into a cultural ensemble.

The group now focuses more on dancing, singing, poetry and drama.

They perform in orphanages or at events by invitation and at birthdays.

Founder Ntuthuzelo Pungulwa said they used to counsel the youth on drugs, crime and early pregnancy, but discovered that the youth did not like to be talked to all the time; that they preferred some fun as well.

“We decided to introduce dancing, drama and poetry on realisation that just talking to them brought nothing,” he said.

It worked like magic, he said they received a lot of attention from the youngsters, because the group is made up of children between the ages of six and 16 years.

Pungulwa said they do not just focus on performing arts they do other things as well.

“We also teach the children about culture and where they come from, so they can also know more about their clan names and their ancestry,” he said.

He said amongst other things they teach is how to tell when one is being abused and what to do when they are being abused.

Pungulwa said they receive their support mostly from community members who hold them in awe of what they were doing with their offsprings.

“We have about 30 members in the group and when we call parents for a meeting you will find that only about seven will show up which means not all of them are supportive,” he said.

He added that they do not get any financial support because when they have to travel outside of Khayelitsha, they must use their own money, and would love it if anyone would sponsor their trips.
