A 31-year-old Philippi woman, Sinazo Yanta, hosted a car wash to raise funds for her youth organisation Philippi Development Agency.

Yanta started the organisation to keep youth off the streets last month and is now looking at ways to raise necessary funds to run the organisation.

Yanta said she saw a lot of children loitering the streets after school, on weekends and during holidays and she decided to start the organisation to help them. The organisation is tailor-made to respond to some of the challenges faced by the youth. It offers young children lessons on how to treat themselves after school, the weekends and during holidays.

Yanta said teenage pregnancy is another challenge that the organisation plans to deal with. She said a lot of young girls fall pregnant at an early age because no one talks to them about sex. She added that young boys also get into drugs and gangs also because there is no support for them.

She said they do not only talk to the youth, however, they also mentor and teach them modeling, acting and majorettes.

“When we were growing up there used to be things such as beauty pageants, but that does not happen anymore,” she said. “We want to bring those things back to keep the youth busy.”

Yanta said the funds raised during the event will be used to feed children during the current school holidays. She said until the schools open on Tuesday 2 April, they will have the youth for almost the whole day.

Yanta said the youth is responding positively to what they are doing because a lot of them want to join the organisation.

She said even parents support what they are doing because they know if their children are not at home they are in a safe place.

She added that Philippi has no youth hubs and as a result they are using a local crèche.
