A confident walk, charming smile and a captivating personality were the criterion at the Mr and Miss Cool African Talent pageant held in Khayelitsha on Saturday. Andile Msizi Sports Complex in Site B was the place where 21 boys and girls battled it out for the attention of the judges.Fifteen girls out-competed each other in various categories while about six boys also vied for the main title. In the end Sizwe Yaphi and Zizipho Tena were crowned King and Queen of the event and walked away with stationery and clothing accessories as the main prizes. The event was organised by Khayelitsha pageant favourite Lorna Gweva as part of her on-going efforts at boosting teen self- confident from her area.“This was a pageant with a difference as we had little emphasis on beauty but more on the personality and confidence of the participants...They manner in which they handle themselves and the confidence they show when on stage,” said Gweva. She said that this philosophy is important in the development of self esteem for young people. “Everyone has their way of being beautiful and society tells us that there is one of being beautiful. You either have to be skinny, straight hair or light skinned. This then makes children who do not look like that think that they are not good-looking. We want youngsters to know that they can be their own kind of beautiful and must accept it,” she said. She said that even though this was her first event she is happy with the turnout and the quality of the show. “The show was a great success even though I panicked as we didn’t start in time but it all turned out well. I’m excited about the next event which will be targeted at giving plus sized models a showcase,” she said. She is working towards hosting a Miss Thick event in October were girls who don’t fit the category of skinny models can flaunt their assets, she said.
