From humble beginnings in the dusty and often crime ridden streets of Nyanga, songstress Esethu Siwe is now living her dream.

Esethu,23, who has joined the award winning Joyous Celebration, started belting out gospel songs from an early age, appearing in many Highest Praise concerts in the home base.

That was until May 2015 when she entered Joyous Celebration auditions in Port Elizabeth.

“I received a call up in September and I was overwhelmed with disbelief,” said Esethu.

She credits her sister Nosipho Manyonga who insisted that she audition for Joyous Celebration when the moment arose.

“In my wildest dreams I had never thought I would wear the Joyous gowns but God had other plans for me,”she said.

Next week Esethu hopes that her family, friends and gospel lovers will descend in numbers to watch her perform in the Joyous 20 concert next Tuesday and Wednesday at the Friend of God Church in Goodwood.

“I am so excited to have a chance to perform at home,” she enthused.

The group is celebrating 20 years in the music industry.

One of the co-founders, Jabu Hlongwane, said their latest album, Joyous 20, was a celebration of their many years in the business and how they had gained support.

“Joyous 20 speaks of how God has been good to us and how He continues to bless us,” he said.

Hlongwane said back in 1996 when they released Joyous 1, they did not think a follow-up album would be possible.

“We’ve had hard times and we really did not think we would have Joyous 2. It is all God. This is not about us.”

Hlongwane described Joyous Celebration as a training academy for musicians.

“We get young people who are gifted in music. We groom them, empower them and when they are ready to leave, we release them.

“In most cases the guys don’t want to leave. You see tears when you tell them it’s time to go,” he said.

Joyous Celebration has produced the likes of Ntokozo Mbambo, Nqubeko Mbatha, Brenda Mtambo, Mahalia Buchanan, Khaya Mthethwa, Brian Temba, Andile B and Swazi Dlamini, to mention just a few.

Hlongwane said they would never stand in anyone’s way when they felt they were ready to expand.
