Celebrating fruits of freedom

2017-05-04 06:00

Whereas Freedom Month came to an end on Sunday, allow me to reflect.

As it is used as an occasion to celebrate. My mum had goosebumps all over her body when she went to vote for the first time in 1994. People didn’t know whether the elections would be peaceful or violent. I was 16 in 1994, so I was not eligible to vote. Every nerve and sinew in my body wanted to vote so I could be part of the historic moment. I felt the winds of change blowing during the election that would finally put an end to the Apartheid era. Life would never be the same again. To all my fellow South Africans, let us enjoy our freedom responsibly. Our freedom must not infringe on the rights of others. We should also remember that freedom comes with responsibility.
