Scores of people converged at Holy Baptism Church in Zion at Siyanzela in Brown’s Farm, Philippi to celebrate Nokhawulezile Jadi’s 100 years birthday last Saturday.

Nokhawulezile who was looking calm for almost the rest of the proceedings is only left with her younger brother.

She was born on the 30 January 1918 and was gifted with 12 children, but only five are left, and has 26 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren.

Among the guests at her party at her party were her fellow congregants and Democratic Alliance provincial MP Nceba Hinana.

Speakers praised Nokhawulezile and described her as strong woman. They also wished her many more years to come.

Speaking on behalf of the church, Nokwandiso Ntshoko described Nokhawulezile as humble and quite person.

“She is a mother to us. We all listen when she speaks even though she doesn’t like to talk too much. She respects us as her leaders in the church even though she is an elder. We are really proud to have her in the church,” said Ntshoko, adding that Nokhawulezile is still an active member of the church.

Philippi Development Forum chairperson and owner of Amazondi Holdings, Monwabisi Mbaliswana, said her children are lucky to have a grandmother and great-grandmother like Nokhawulezile.

“You (children) are very lucky to have such great mother. Some of us our parents died long ago. You are blessed to have an elder like her,” he said.

However, he said it was sad that Nokhawulezile is turning 100 years old but still living in a shack.

“It is disturbing to see children who were born in 1994, but are occupying house, whereas Gogo still lives in a shack. The government needs to intervene and do something. And they (government) must quickly build her a house while she is still alive or if the government fails to do so, must identify land where we will build it on our own as Philippi business people,” said Mbaliswana.

Hinana vowed to convey the message to the MEC for Human Settlements Bonginkosi Madikizela, to assist the family with a house.

“As I’m working close with the minister, I will pass on the message. As government, I think we need to prioritise elders and give them houses,” he said.

“Today we are here to celebrate with Gogo.

Even Nelson Mandela didn’t reach 100 years. This is a milestone for Gogo that needs to be celebrated,” said Hinana.

One of Nkhawulezile’s grandchildren Lindiwe Komani,38, said she couldn’t believe that her granny is celebrating a century.

“I didn’t anticipate that she would reach the 100 years.

And I’m glad that she is celebrating her day with us (grandchildren) and her great- grandchildren,” she said.

Komani described Gogo as a straightforward but a nice person to be with.

Some of the gifts that Gogo received were blankets, food parcels, a flask, 16 dinner set and a cake.
