Certificates do not mean knowledge

2018-06-14 06:00

A nation without a vibrant and educated youth is no nation.

Being educated does not only refer to youth with qualifications, but also refers to youth with practical knowledge and skills to deal with daily challenges.

Let us first agree to the fact that the youth is born into this world, and all they become is a reflection of what the world is like today.

You cannot deal with youth affairs effectively outside of what happens in the country. If we reflect on youth and our country, the youth is now telling leadership what they are doing is not acceptable anymore.

The relations between the youth and our country are not friendly/healthy at all. This needs to change, failing which we shall always be worried and uncertain of what the future holds for us.

To transform our youth starts with changing our attitude and minds first.

The 1976 youth is popular today mainly because of a remarkable contribution towards the fight against the apartheid system. The main factor was the Bantu education system that was meant to colonize the African children, but never succeeded 100%.

This drives me to wonder what the current education system does to the African child? What does the current education system do to decolonize the minds? Are we happy with the current type of education system? In all countries of this world, the education system is used to produce the type of people desired.

And the actual impact of any education system is best measured on the basis of what we see in the conduct of the people.

Radical education transformation leads to a transformed youth and country in general. Everyday people complain about youth that are not focused, youth that are violent, youth that do not care; the list is endless.

It is now that time our government introduces some new school subjects relevant to the transformation process.

The government is now obsessed about bringing back the spirit of humanity/ubuntu back into the nation.

Have you ever imagined the kind of people we can be if ‘Humanity/Ubuntu’ become an official school subject.

I strongly believe this can help the youth develop a better sense of understanding what is good/bad conduct, and can inject a stronger sense of responsibility.

Don’t you think that could also help to bring back people with good morals and ethics?

History must also become a compulsory official school subject. We must not forget that 1976 youth was inspired by the historical struggle against apartheid.

The majority of 1976 youth was focused, as compared to today’s youth.Without a clear picture regarding our historical background, our youth is bound to fumble. It is not the historical background that makes us understand who we are?

We must not forget that identity is a big challenge facing our nation today. Youth must also know why was education called ‘Bantu education’.

The African youth today behave as Americans and always use English when talking to each other. When the language dies, national identity dies as well. I don’t blame them; they are victims of circumstance.

It must be known by the youth that the apartheid system created the ‘identity confusion’ or identity crises we see today, by giving us different labels. The youth must understand that the term ‘Bantu’ was used to define our identity.
