A young star from Gugulethu is putting her area on the map as she is representing the country in the 2019 Cosafa Women’s Cup tournament which started yesterday (Wednesday 31 July) and will end on 11 August in Port Elizabeth. Noxolo Cesane (18), who is currently playing for University of Western Cape FC, is among 20 players who are selected to play for Banyana Banyana in the tournament.She has previously represented the u.17 and u.20 national soccer team. “I grew up playing street games with boys. In 2009 I joined a local club known as City Lads. Then in 2011, I moved to City Roses till 2018. Earlier this year I joined UWC,” she said. She received a message from Banyana Banyana on Mandela Day (18 July) informing her about her inclusion in the squad. “I was busy doing my school work at home. When I checked my WhatsApp messages I was surprised when I saw that I’m added onto the Banyana Banyana group with other players. Later the management sent us a message congratulating us for being selected into the team. That is how I found out that I was selected,” she said.The versatile player, who can play either right or left back or as an attacking midfielder, vowed to make her family and community proud. She described Refiloe Jane as her favourite player.The Grade 11 learner from Fezeka High School, in Gugulethu, said she is able to balance her studies and soccer as they are allowed to bring their books to the camp. Cesane said she had toured many countries in the world playing soccer. “Earlier this year I was in China playing for the u.20 team in the Four Nations tournament. In December 2018, I was part of the u.21 squad that participated in the Five Games Region Tournament in Gaborone, Botswana. I also played in Nigeria for the u.17 World Cup Qualifiers in 2016 just to count the few tournaments,” she bragged. She urged her peers to stick to their dreams for them to be successful.
