Jungle Theatre Company creates original theatre inspiring, empowering and connecting young people’s hearts to care for nature, community and culture. Jungle has been facilitating the Muizenberg Performing Arts Club from the start of this year for children aged between 9 and 13 years from diverse backgrounds. This project is kindly funded by The Rolf Stephan Nussbaum Foundation. The Foundation, set up by Rolf-Stephan Nussbaum to manage philanthropic giving, is a living charitable trust that supports arts and culture, sports, building projects and libraries.During the sessions, facilitated by Jungle’s Artistic Director Vincent Meyburgh and theatre maker Ntombifuthi Mkhasibe, the children explore all aspects of creating and performing the Jungle style of theatre based on African folktales. In the first term the children were introduced to storytelling culminating in a performance for younger children and parents. During the second term they explored mime and music and created a non-verbal performance which was attended by children from the Muizenberg Junior aftercare including the parents of the participants. In this term the children are learning to use masks and dance in a performance which they will perform at the Muizenberg Parade as part of the Muizenberg Festival on Sunday 15 October starting in the Muizenberg Park at 11:00. The fourth term will see the children bringing it all together for a public performance at the Masque Theatre, Muizenberg on Wednesday 29 November. This event is open to the public and will be MC-ed by George Mkhululi Smith from the Blacksmith Entertainment Company.
