The community of Nyanga took to the streets mobilising residents ahead of a prayer for the community on Saturday 29 September.

The prayer against crime was attended by police officers, community policing forum (CPF) members, religious leaders and the residents of the broader Nyanga area.

CPF chairperson Martin Makasi said they held the prayer service to say that “enough is enough”.

“Once again Nyanga has been named as number one in crime during the crime statistics released this year,” he said.

He said by doing this they are mobilising people including religious leaders in their fight against crime.

Makasi said it is important to include religious leaders because parents of the people who commit crimes, go to church.

He said this will not be the last initiative they do to try and bring people together in the fight against crime.

Makasi added that people need to stand up for themselves and not wait on government to do everything for them.

One of the religious leaders, Reverend Luyanda Papiyana of Work of Christ Ministry in Nyanga, said it is important for churches to be involved in the fight against crime.

“Some of the victims and perpetrators of crime are our church members so it is important for us to be involved,” he said.

Papiyana said it is high time churches speak out about what is wrong in communities because they have been silenced for a long time only preaching about the Bible.

He added that they need to engage with communities in order for victims to speak out. By doing that, they can help others who are going through the same thing.
