City Girls FC became the champions of the Ikasi Women’s Month Exhibition Tournament after beating Juventus 2-1 on penalties on Saturday 31 August. The match ended 0-0 after 30 minutes. The event was held at Hopolong Primary School in Khayelitsha and was organised by the Ikasi Soccer School organisation to wrap up Women’s Month. City Girls walked away with a trophy and gold medals for the four aside football tournament. Some of the teams that participated were Madrid, PSG, Pin Pops, Ajax, Super Strikers and City Masters.Kasi Soccer School is a non-profit organisation that is assisting with the training of football skills to young girls in primary schools in Khayelitsha. They work with among others, Eluxolweni, Kukhanyile, Lwandle and Hopolang primary schools. Founder and Kasi Soccer School organiser Dumisani Ntsodo said their objective is to expose girls to football at an early age. “This is in line with the rules of SAFA and FIFA to promote women’s football,” he said, adding that their ages are between eight and 16. He said football also teaches them discipline and help them to stay fit. One of the coaches Phikolomzi Bongweni described the tournament as a step in the right direction. “We want to change the mentality that people have about soccer thinking that it is only for boys. We want to groom them to be professional players and play for Banyana Banyana if possible,” said Bongweni. He said each school has a coach. Bongweni urged parents to come and support their children when they are playing.After the tournament, all the players participating in the tournament including four coaches and staff members of the organisation received new tracksuits donated by Grand West Sun International.
