The City of Cape Town’s Health Department in Khayelitsha led the charge on International “Move for Health” Day last Thursday.

The department organised an event, in cooperation with other City departments, that saw participants leaving their workstations on foot and converging on the Lookout Hill for an aerobics class on the sidewalks, followed by a climb to the top of the hill.

The walk from various departure points attracted much attention, with community members curious to find out what the occasion was all about.

Volunteer personal trainer, Marlene Wilcox, led the aerobics session for staff from City Health, Town planning, Recreation and Parks as well as Property Management. ‘The increase of chronic diseases such as diabetes, hypertension and cardiovascular diseases requires a lifestyle change, which includes being less sedentary and increasing physical activity. By taking to the streets in this manner, we hope to highlight the importance of staying on the move and keeping lifestyle diseases at bay,’ said City Health Area Manager, Doctor Virginia De Azevedo.
