Unemployment has forced a 29-year-old man from Ilitha Park, Khayelitsha, to be innovative to support his family. Asanda Sobe, who lives in Ngcwalazi Street, said he started his sneaker washing business after his employment contract at a Somerset West gym ended. Sobe said he needed to do something in order to put some food on the table. “I noticed that most people are busy and have no time to wash their sneakers. I saw a gap in the market and I grabbed it with both hands. My business is growing gradually as people bring their sneakers including suede shoes,” said Sobe. He said most of his customers are young people. “There is a small number of elders who are bringing their sneakers to me. The majority is the youth because they have no time to wash their sneakers and they are partying on weekends. I also clean suede shoes and do sneaker painting,” adding that he charged R65 for washing a pair of sneakers, R300 for sneaker painting and R80 for cleaning suede shoes.Sobe said when the business is good he washes more than 30 pairs of sneakers on the weekend. Anybody who wants to bring their sneakers can call Sobe on 060 032 2676.
