The death of Zwelakhe Collin Martin has sent shock waves throughout the previously tight-knit community of Langa.

Affectionately known as “Zozo”, Martin was allegedly stabbed to death by a close friend after an altercation that took place in Tygervalley over the weekend.

Distraught family members described “Zozo” as a humble soul.

“The sad news of a passing on of a beloved son of the soil, Zwelakhe Zozo Martin has left us shattered,” said Mandla Mlambo.

Zozo is the son of a renowned Langa entrepreneur Stunka Tyiwa.

A visibly shaken Mlambo said Zozo was an unpretentious individual who always possessed a great sense of humour.

“He loved his family and relatives and was admired for his willingness to assist and make a difference in their lives. He had so many friends who enjoyed his company due to his strong character as a jovial companion,” he added.

Zozo grew up in Langa and started his schooling at St Louis Primary School before crossing over to Luhlaza Secondary School in Khayelitsha.

In his formative years, he was regarded as somewhat of an idol amongst his peers as he was one of a few that could manipulate a vehicle and in his case he even drove a truck, which was but a distant dream to them.

This was due to the influence of his mentor and role model Selby Tyiwa who taught him how to drive at a very young age.

It seems he had inherited his father’s entrepreneural spirit at a very young age, for even during his high school years, Zozo worked very closely with his father as well as with his cousin Selby Tyiwa in successfully running “Stunkas Handy Gas”.

They sold gas and paraffin in Langa, Gugulethu and Khayelitsha.

He had passion for his father’ s business and he passed on during a time that he was busy striving to re-engineer a plan that would provide a turnaround strategy to revive the family business.

Zozo leaves behind his parents as well as his sisters Nandipha, Shalomah, Libhongo, and brothers Gcina and Xolani.
