The battle against crime for Kosovo residents has received a big injection, what with the local neighbourhood watch taking hold of a shipping container in which to store their goods and operate as an office.

The event took place on Tuesday in Philippi, and the container will also double up as a community hub where service delivery issues can be reported.

JP Smith, the Mayco member for Safety, Security and Social Services delivered the container.

The package included reflective bibs, torches and two-way radios to help with patrols in the area.

Neighbourhood Watch chairperson Khanyiso Mruqelo said the delivery of the goods was crucial as these will help fight crime in the area.

He said before they used to hold briefing sessions in a member’s household, which posed a danger to individuals.

“Before we would use someone’s home to gather before going out at night, which meant that person would be targeted by thugs because they would see them as a threat,” he said.

Mruqelo said it is good for them to have a base where they will not just make their plans before going on patrols but where they will store their equipment as well.

Community member Simphiwe Gwanya said now he will know where to go should he have a grievance.

Kosovo is part of the Nyanga Police cluster, which has come under the spotlight again after being branded the murder capital of South Africa.

Nyanga Police station commander Brigadier Vuyisile Ncata said the container will help because the Nyanga police station is distant for residents to report crime.
