“And men have lost their reason,” so would have said Mark Anthony, one of the unique characters in William Shakespeare’s book “Julius Caesar”. The irresponsible and uncalled for action by the Correctional Services officials to invite strip dancers to entertain prisoners on June 16 at its facilities cannot be condoned. In fact the officials behind the incident must face the might of the law. It must be a lesson to their colleagues not to repeat the same mistake.

The Department of Correctional Services is one of the Departments whose security is supposed to be tight, because it keeps people who have been arrested for committing crime. The department therefore needs to make sure that criminals are confined to its yard and people are safe. This is because the very reason that these people are convicted is for them to face the consequences of their own actions.

June 16 is the day the country commemorates the heroic deeds of the 1976 youth and as such it is a very special day in the history of the country. There’s no way that one can justify the disrespecting or mocking of the event that involved the sacrifice of lives for the cause of our liberation.

Struggle events like June 16 are not supposed to be celebrated but commemorated. When you celebrate it means enjoying and when you enjoy you can do whatever that entertains you. Not justifying what the officials under discussion did, these officials allowed inmates to celebrate. Therefore if they were celebrating and the day is said to be celebrated then you can only charge them for doing what they did in the facility. Be that as it may we are adults and without any doubt should differentiate between what is wrong and right. Therefore the officials crossed the line: officially, politically and morally. We must lead our children through saying, doing and walking.
